God of Creation, Preserver of life, Sovereign Lord, We pray for the people of New South Wales and Queensland today. Please, in your mercy take care of them. Preserve their lives, their houses and their townships. Have mercy on the animals and birds of farm and bush.

Help those who are fleeing to find safe passage. Please give special help to those with children or disability or infirmity.

Please calm the winds and send cool air to the regions in danger. Send rain to suppress the fires. Provide resources and energy to do what must be done. Please give strength and wisdom to government officials, emergency workers and, especially, to front-line firefighters.

Please send Christian people—ministers, professionals, volunteers and neighbours—to be agents of your love, mercy and comfort. Fill them with grace and your Spirit so they can act and speak in the name of Jesus. And help them to know and show the peace that only you can give.

We pray for those who don’t yet know you. As they confront this terrible reminder of their frailty, please let them call to you, and please hear their prayers. Deliver them from the dangers of this day and help them to find out about the greater rescue you have provided through your Son.

We thank you finally, heavenly Father that you are sovereign and that no terror takes you by surprise. Thank you for the great promises you make to all who call on you through Christ. Please vindicate those promises today.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? … No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:35, 36-39)
